About American Black Bears: The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is the most common and widely distributed bear species in North America. They typically have a black coat, although their fur can range from brown to cinnamon, and even blonde or white in some rare cases. Black bears are smaller than grizzly bears, with males averaging between 150-300 pounds, while females are generally lighter, ranging from 100-200 pounds. They are highly adaptable and can be found in various habitats, including forests, swamps, and mountains. Black bears are omnivorous, with diets that primarily consist of vegetation, fruits, nuts, insects, and occasionally small mammals and carrion. They are excellent climbers and often seek refuge or food in trees. Generally solitary animals, black bears come together during mating season and when females raise their cubs.
