Today we're visiting the Aqueduct in Arcueil, a commune in the Val-de-Marne department in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. The name Arcueil means "place of the arches" (Latin radical arcus, "arch", and Celtic suffix -ialo, "place of"), in reference to the Roman aqueduct carrying water to the Roman city of Lutetia (modern Paris). Between 1613 and 1624 a bridge-aqueduct over 400 meters long was constructed to bring water from the spring of Rungis, south of Arcueil, across the Bievre river to the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. Between 1868 and 1872 another aqueduct was superimposed above the previous one, forming part of the system bringing water from the river Vanne to Paris. This puzzle is based on a 1874 painting by Jean Baptiste Armand Guillaumin.
The painting "Church of Santa Maria della Febbre" by Pieter Jansz Saenredam depicts a serene architectural scene of the church in Rome. Saenredam, a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his precise and luminous architectural paintings, captures the ruins and surrounding structures with meticulous detail. The church, which once stood near St. Peter’s Basilica, was later demolished to make way for expansions of Vatican structures. The artwork portrays an oblique view of the decayed yet picturesque church, with an obelisk standing prominently in the foreground. A horse-drawn carriage and a few figures in period attire add a sense of life and movement to the peaceful landscape. The color palette is soft and warm, emphasizing the sunlit walls and atmospheric depth. This painting is a fine example of Saenredam’s ability to blend topographical accuracy with artistic interpretation to evoke a sense of historical nostalgia.
