About The Satyr Tragopan: The Satyr tragopan (Tragopan satyra) is a strikingly colorful pheasant species found in the Himalayan forests of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of Tibet. Males are especially eye-catching, with vivid red plumage, speckled with white spots, and inflatable blue facial skin and lappets used in courtship displays. Females are more cryptically colored in brown and black, providing excellent camouflage in the undergrowth. These birds inhabit temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, typically at elevations between 2,400 to 4,200 meters. They are ground-dwelling and feed on a varied diet of seeds, berries, shoots, and insects. Satyr tragopans are known for their shy and elusive nature, often remaining hidden in dense vegetation. // Image Credit: Beebe, William, et al. A Monograph of the Pheasants.
