About Piper Mestonii: Piper mestonii, also known as Queensland long pepper or long pepper, is an evergreen climbing vine found in the rainforests of New Guinea and a small area in northeastern Queensland, Australia. It grows in lush rainforests, often near creeks and rivers, at altitudes from sea level to about 350 meters (1,150 feet). The vine has a sturdy stem up to 4 cm (1.6 inches) thick and large, ovate leaves that can grow up to 27 cm (11 inches) long and 20 cm (7.9 inches) wide, with pointed tips and heart-shaped or tapered bases. This plant is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants. The female flowers form cylindrical spikes in the leaf axils, which eventually develop into bright red, fleshy fruits. These fruits, known as infructescences, can grow up to 7 cm (2.8 inches) long in Australia and even larger in New Guinea. Piper mestonii thrives in the rainforests of New Guinea but is much rarer in Australia, found only in a small area of the Bellenden Ker Range in Queensland. // Image Credit: Bailey, Frederick Manson. Farm Near Duivendrecht by Piet Mondrian, painted in 1916, marks a transitional phase in the artist’s journey from naturalistic landscapes to abstraction. The painting depicts a farmhouse and a row of bare trees reflected in a calm body of water, creating a striking sense of symmetry. Mondrian’s use of warm earthy tones - reds, oranges, and browns - contrasts with soft blues and greens, evoking a serene yet vibrant atmosphere. The curvilinear forms of the trees and the rectilinear structure of the farmhouse highlight a dynamic balance, hinting at Mondrian’s future focus on geometry in his abstract works. The visible brushstrokes give the painting a textured quality, particularly in the sky and water, where movement and energy come alive. Flattened perspective and overlapping forms reveal the influence of Cubism, as Mondrian simplifies the scene into geometric shapes. The reflections in the water add a dreamlike quality, blending reality with abstraction. This work is a key example of Mondrian’s evolving style, bridging his naturalistic beginnings with his iconic, abstract compositions of lines and primary colors.
Afternoon in the Garden by Henri Edmond Cross is a vibrant, light-filled painting exemplifying the Neo-Impressionist style. Created in 1906, the piece uses Pointillism, a technique where small dots of color blend optically to create luminosity. The painting depicts a tranquil garden scene with figures leisurely relaxing under the shade of trees. Bright greens, yellows, and blues dominate the palette, suggesting a sunlit, serene atmosphere. Cross’s brushwork evokes a sense of harmony and rhythmic energy. The figures appear dreamlike and secondary to the lush, idyllic landscape, emphasizing the interplay of light and color. This work reflects the artist's belief in art as an escape into beauty and serenity. Its focus on nature and leisure aligns with the broader Symbolist ethos of the period.
"Still Life with Cantaloupe" by William Mason Brown is a meticulous painting featuring an array of fruits on a white cloth-draped table. The central focus is a large, textured cantaloupe, surrounded by ripe peaches with their velvety skin and varying shades of red and yellow. Clusters of both green and dark purple grapes add a contrast of colors and textures, while a single pear and scattered raspberries provide additional visual interest. A few nuts, including a walnut and hazelnuts, are placed near the center of the table, accompanied by a small knife with a white handle. Behind the fruits, a clear glass goblet reflects light and adds depth to the scene. The dark background ensures the vibrant arrangement of fruits remains the focal point. Brown's attention to detail is evident in the textures, colors, and reflective surfaces, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty of everyday objects.

To the right, a rustic wooden cabin partially obscured by a lush, green tree suggests a quiet, rural life, nestled close to the water's edge. In the background, the fog softens the landscape, blending the water with the sky and the distant trees, creating a harmonious and muted palette. This scene is further enriched with wildlife, as a few ducks calmly float near the shore, adding life to the otherwise still morning.
Today's puzzle is based on a painting created by Claude Monet in 1871 during his time in the Netherlands called "Houses by the Bank of the River Zaan". This work reflects Monet’s fascination with light, water, and architecture, capturing the serene beauty of the Dutch landscape.
